German company CRONIMET Mining – Power Solutions plans in partnership with Mozambican company MOTSE to build a mini solar energy distribution grid with a 'pay-as-you-go' system on the island of Chiloane, in Sofala province, the company said in a statement posted on its website.
Under a Memorandum of Understanding signed with the Mozambican Energy Fund (Funae) the two companies plan to finance and build the mini-grid and guarantee the production of 200 megawatts of electricity, which is enough to supply electricity to homes, public institutions, commercial entities and water extraction pumps.
The island of Chiloane is located approximately 1,000 metres off the Mozambican coast, with a population estimated at 3,000 people, who to date have used car batteries to meet their energy needs.
The three entities involved in this project – CRONIMET Mining – Power Solutions, MOTSE and Funae – will set up a consortium to build the mini-grid under a public-private partnership.
The partners hope that this pilot project on Chiloane will demonstrate the economic viability of pay-as-you-go solar mini-grids financed and managed by private entities, thus launching a new business with the capacity to provide electricity to more than 5 million people through 60 similar projects.
