Policies favouring renewable energy are key for policy makers to achieve certain environmental targets. Considering the abundant hours of sunshine available, it is expected that among Mediterranean countries, solar should play a key part in achieving ambitious renewable energy targets. In some cases, this has clearly been the case, in others this has not materialised, or has happened only partially.

This study presents trends and results obtained by a number of European countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea namely, Croatia, Cyprus, France, Greece, Italy, Malta, Portugal, Slovenia and Spain in terms of exploiting solar photovoltaic and solar thermal technologies over the 2010-2016 period, specifically in the residential sector.
